Tasmania’s Salmon Industry

The Environmental Crisis

I believe what is happening to Tasmania’s beaches, waterways, and native fisheries is nothing short of frightening. The salmon industry has done irrevocable harm to our beautiful, world-renowned coastline that Tasmania is known for.

Beyond the Industry Claims

The government and the Labor opposition have attempted to validate the salmon industry under the guise that it creates thousands of jobs and contributes heavily to the economy – neither of which is true. This is an industry shrouded in secrecy and protected by the government.

A Matter of Transparency

We are constantly bombarded with propaganda from the salmon industry, along with images of politicians in high-vis vests and hard hats, promoting the benefits of eating salmon and expanding salmon farms. The industry and government are working overtime to downplay disasters, manipulate figures, and play with facts to suit their narrative.

The Real Environmental Impact

The environmental damage caused by the salmon industry is not unique to Tasmania—it’s a global issue. From declining marine health to the buildup of waste and chemicals in waterways, the evidence is undeniable that the salmon industry plays a direct role in the deterioration of our water environments.

Public Health Concerns

Not only are fish farms ruining our beaches and rivers, but they potentially pose a threat to human health as well. Salmon farms administer large quantities of antibiotics, which then leach into the surrounding ocean. Scientists have raised serious concerns that this practice could accelerate the rise of antibiotic resistance.

My Commitment

I have become quite vocal on my position on the salmon industry. While I believe the jobs the industry the industry creates are incredibly important, we have been allowing the billion dollar companies that run them unfettered access to our water ways for too long. It’s time they start giving back to every Tasmanian—after all, I believe every Tasmanian cares deeply for our waterways.

The Path Forward

We must keep calling on the government to stop allowing this industry to continue to expand, and better yet, calling on the government to make this industry more accountable, transparent, and sustainable.
